Music Writing

I have been writing about electronic music since 2012, when I founded my own music blog during university. I’ve written for globally-known music sites and media including GRAMMY, Mixmag and Resident Advisor.

I write the Music Pages for the Tokyo Weekender magazine, interviewing a different artist for each edition and tipping a selection of upcoming events.

My music writing also looks at trends within the underground music scene, including queer clubbing in Japan and anarchist spaces.

• The Club Hidden Between the Runways of Japan’s Largest Airport: a 3000-word feature for Resident Advisor. I interviewed over 10 people to build the story of Kinone Pension, a space with a colourful, contentious history that goes back over 70 years, marking the first time that the tale was told to the world.
• Japanese Rap Went Global in 2024: a 2000-word piece for GRAMMY on Japanese rap, with interviewees including its biggest names, like Awich and Yuki Chiba. The piece was picked up and translated into Japanese media outlets, including Eyescream.
• Queer Clubbing: a reported piece on how queer clubbing has progressed in the Japanese capital, a piece in The Japan Times. I interviewed key players of the queer club scene, in English and Japanese, to give a rounded view of its impact for Japan’s widest-read English language media.
• Music Pages (no.5): local musician, NTsKi, picked her favourite recent albums for my ongoing music column in Tokyo Weekender. I also pick 4-5 key events happening in Tokyo for each edition.

• Ukraine Aid, a reactive piece that I pitchedin the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. I quickly compiled this list of Ukrainian labels and compilations within one day of the news breaking, in Inverted Audio.
• Burial, album review for Japan’s biggest electronic music site, ele-king. The review was part of a three-part section, translated into Japanese.
• Cyro Lab – Changing a Lot copywriting for Laura Lies In. I worked closely with the label head to craft a refined album synopsis.
• DohnavuÌr – The Flow Across Borders, copywriting for Bleep saw me write various website copy, including this review of DohnavuÌr’s album.
